Grogs at La Roche Caribet

Jacques le Borgne Centurion (Turb Leader)
[Grog leader, Premonitions, Sharp ears; Missing eye, Decrepit: wounds]
Married Louri in 1226
Abel the Smuggler (Petty Outlaw)
"adaptable" or "opportunist" is how he might describe himself; others might say "dubious" or worse. [Petty outlaw]
Abel was wandering the lands of Normandy when he encountered Magus Joach and grogs, lost and making heavy weather of the wily inhabitants of Normandy. He rescued them and guided them home. In turn, he appears to be making himself at home at Caribet (well away from any creditors he might have left behind...)
Alban Vauremy (Bookbinder)
[Visual Eidetic Memory; Low self-esteem, Lame since birth]
Alban is a Master Bookbinder (Craft Bookbinding 8 (stitching 9)), and a most competent leatherworker (Craft leathercraft 4 (tooling 5)) when considering the leatherwork on the book cover.
Arnaud (scribe)
[Mike] [Clear thinker, Venus' blessing, Educated; Lame, Duty-bound]
Married Adele Clouard (daughter of the Steward), 1222
Caspar "le Jeune"
[Enduring Con] [used to be "Green"]
Married to Beatriz Rouet, with a small daughter.
Denis Belon (Charcoal burner)
[Animal Ken(birds); Reclusive] (speaks to birds as friends)
Elli l'Arbellatrieuse (Veteran)
[Good arms; Outsider: Languedoc, Hatred: de Montfort]
Francis le Courroucé
[Berserk; Permanently surly]
Fulk Malavis
Mysogynist illuminator brought in by Sir Achilles, but working for the magi in the Scriptorium.
The grogs dangle him from the rafters at the Midwinter feast after several years of magical hangings (after insulting various magae).
Personal grogGalienne (ex-groom now Lady Galienne de St Eloi)
[Pete] [Jack-of-all-trades, Meddler, Weakness (nobility)]
Galienne turned out to have some genuine noble blood, being the illegitimate daughter of a lord near Petrusca.
She bore a bastard child (partly acknowledged) to Sir Achilles from the Midwinter feast 1224, and then a child to Sir Yves from Midwinter 1225.
In June 1226 she gets her heart's desire, and Sir Yves' hand in marriage, when Speculor & Sir Achilles arrange matters.
Garth fils-de-Troll
[Large, Tough; Delusion: troll-blood, Disfigured: flabby, warty]
August 1220: rescued from a Cave Troll by Maga Speranda and others.
Georges Silverwright
Master silversmith, brought in by Sir Achilles, to take advantage fo the silver being mined.
Girard the Idle (Archer)
[Tough; Deep Sleeper, Social Handicap - bone idle]
A classic idle soldier, always skiving... bone idle; a modest Archer if you can stir him up... not much to recommend him actually.
Guibert the Offensive to Animals (Archer)
[Archer, Tough; Terror of Heights, Offensive to Animals]
Guibert had just lost a post in the mercenaries of the Duke: he spooked one too many horses, was ordered away and found himself suddenly overlooking a height - and clammed up. He was found quivering, and could give no good account of himself - and was dismissed.
He was hired at the fair at Dinan, where he was hoping to find some other troop, which would not spot his terrors - and preferably one which didn't employ too many animals. He can't place what it is about horses & hounds but they know he doesn't like them and react in advance.
Other than his terror at heights, he's an ideal soldier: tough, strong, accurate, unquestioning of orders…
Gwilhem the Outlaw (Hunter)
[Sheila] [Sharp Ears, Direction Sense; Outlaw, Social Handicap: outspoken]
Gwilhem takes the opening of the "Pater noster" very seriously. He reasons that, as God is the Father of us all, then all men are brothers. He also takes quite seriously the scriptural warnings about riches hindering the path to Heaven and admires the community of the earliest Christians, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, where property was shared out for the benefit of all according to need. On the whole, this means he is charitable and respectful to everyone, regardless of who they are, unless he feels they are oppressive. While, he believes, there are some grounds for distinction -- as an older brother may be allowed a degree of authority over the younger siblings, and as some of the earliest Christians were given particular duties and responsibilities to serve the community -- this must not go too far. All too often, temporal authorities appear to him to overstep the mark.
Personal GrogGwenna, lady's maid to Speranda (recruited for her from St. Brieuc by Pernelle).
[Mike] Compliant, reasonably bright and alert, and with an understanding of what may be expected of her.
Speaks Breton, and reasonable French.
Speranda, seeing how Iuris Perita is assisted in household matters by Pernelle, asked if Iuris and Pernelle could help by obtaining and training a Lady's Maid for herself. Some training would be needed if such were to be recruited from the mundane world, and the woman would be initially unfamiliar with Magi, their ways, and the Gift.
Pernelle went to St. Brieuc in January 1221, and was away around 8 days, returning with Gwenna, who had been a serving girl in the city. She did not join Speranda immediately, as an intruder in the Sanctum (unused to and startled by the Gift) would be a bad influence. Pernelle introduced her to magi and the nature of the Gift, using Iuris and Speranda as examples. Once she could be trusted not to jump at the presence of the Gift, Pernelle instructed her in the simple routine tasks to be expected of her, so that she could function usefully without requiring direction from her mistress (Speranda). Once she formally joined Speranda, Pernelle still met her to instruct her and to ask after her activities so as to correct any inappropriate behaviour in a newcomer unused to magi. [All this to spare Maga Speranda any distraction from her studies!]
Georges Trouin (Tanner)
[Long-wind; Social handicap: malodorous] (pilgrimage to Ste-Anne d'Auray)
Gilles Tregon (Quarryman)
[Large; Weak-willed] (pilgrimage to Ste-Anne d'Auray)
Gilles speaks both Breton and French, and is in much demand as an Interpreter.
August 1220: rescued from a Cave Troll by Maga Speranda and others.
Married Ana, daughter of the witch of Lanvia
Heodez
Lady's maid to Lady Helissente. She came with Helissente, and provides a small link back to her former life.
Personal grogHuon (traveller, shyster)
[Pete] [Perfect balance, Troupe Upbringing (Jongleur)]
No-one knows why Speculor favours this disreputable character, but he is cheerful, and proves useful in odd ways when sent out in the field.
Personal grogIgnatio Perez (Veteran, Castellar)
[Sheila] [Tough; Poor memory, Uncommunicative]
Isabelle (scribe)
[Mike] [Educated; terminally shy]
Ivona the "Boy" (Hunter)
[Sheila] [Keen Vision, Strong Will; Transvestite]
Ivona's mother died of disease during her third winter. Her father, a peasant who divided his time between hunting and working as a hired hand on a nearby farm, did not know what to do with a girl. He had always hoped for a boy, but decided to make the best of what he had. He brought her up healthy enough, but treated her as far as possible as he would have done a lad. Her own inclinations did not rebel against this, and she enjoyed accompanying her father into the forest to hunt.
Her father died when she was just turned 15, after he broke his leg and it turned bad. She tried living alone, but was soon sought out by well-meaning local women who tried to take her in hand and turn her into a potential wife. She did not put up with this for long and ran away to the Hiring Fair.
Iussuf le Turcopole
[Veteran, Good Armaments; Hired Sword, Outsider (Levantine)]
Iussuf is the offspring of a French soldier (Sergo's old Sergeant) and a Syrian Christian woman - so he is a Christian, although he is Eastern Orthodox by upbringing, not Roman Catholic. Before his father died, he warned Iussuf of the tide turning against Christians in Outremer, and of warnings of a Fifth Crusade, and when he did die, Iussuf set off to seek his fortune in the true Christian lands where his father was born. There he was fortunate to meet Sergo, and took up with him.
Jacut Gisant (Swineherd)
(formerly Laurent de Blois) [Animal Ken(pigs); Dark Secret]
Johan Staen, Vintner
Just arrived from the Hermitage, distracted from a meandering Pilgrimage supposedly to S. Iago de Compostela. A Saxon German who used to be a successful and prosperous Vintner in Saxony. He has been wandering around Brittany, going from shrine to shrine, for about 6 months now, but has run out of luck and money and been reduced to begging. Having met and talked to members of the Covenant at the Hermitage, he offers his services to the Covenant.
He made the acquaintance of Kadi, when he used to attend Church in Plaintel. He stopped visiting Plaintel when Fr. Edwin set up the new chapel(ette) in Caribet; Kadi was concerned and came seeking him. They have now agreed to marry.
Personal grogJulio "Cicatricé" Cortez (Veteran, Custos Castellar)
[Sheila] [Disfigured]
Kadi
(reputation in Plaintel for giving her ex-husband a hard time) She had met Johan Stän, the vintner, attending Church in Plaintel. When he stopped attending (because Fr. Edwin set up in Caribet), she came looking for him (arrived November 1221) ; they have now agreed to marry.
Konogan
Sir Achilles personal bodyguard. Hired in St. Brieuc, but now residing full-time at Caribet. He thinks himself superior to the Turb grogs who also guard Sir Achilles - he is the only permanent guard, and was personally chosen by Sir Achilles.
Married to Lavena.
Lavena
Wife to Konogan, cook to Sir Achilles.
Louri
Once married a candle-maker, mourned too long after his death and lost her business.
She was told of Caribet, and its need for a candle-maker, by the Merchant Bertrand who recommended she approach them, arriving October 1221.
Married the Centurion, Jacques, in 1226
Little Marc (Archer)
[Archer, Second Sight; Small Frame, Faerie Enmity]
Quiet, unassuming, and slight - almost girlish, even "pretty" - not a lad to impress "the lads". Marc has tried his best to follow his father and become a mercenary archer, but he "isn't a real man". He lost his previous post after the Captain took a shine to him, and he wouldn't accept the advances…
[He has no idea about Faeries; he is aware he can see things others don't but usually keeps that to himself lest others take offence]
Ludwan
Depressed bonded servant, belonging to Petroc the miner. Ludwan and Sennen do the real labour...
Margery Glassblower
A naturally talented young woman, beyond all expected bounds - a real bonus for the magi & their lab-ware.
Margery arrived with her young child, seeking aid as well as offering her skills.
Married to young William.
Personal GrogMaud
Maud arrived in May 1224, with a month or so hanging around before Constantine returned from Vis Hunting, giving everyone time to Judge her... She is young, pretty and obsessed with Constantine. She gives the impression of being useless, but is actually startlingly effective with her Quarterstaff.
[David] [Common Sense, Knack: Great Weapons; Green, Judged Unfairly, Obsessed: Defend Constantine]
She brought a private letter with her, from Constantine's mater, Maga Scintilla Flambonis.
Mered
Bad reputation as a thief in Uzel [Animal ken; Bad reputation]
She ran away into the Forêt de Lorge, became lost, and (in November 1221) ended up at the Covenant, and has asked to stay.
Married Thierry, June 1224
Personal grogMilon (shield grog)
[Pete] [Large, Long-winded, Veteran; Deep sleeper, Claustrophobic, Weak-willed]
Naimes (Tutor)
[David?] [Educated,-; -,Disfigured, Small frame]
Naimes is a frail looking, delicate framed fellow with very short-cropped hair, scarred face and no beard. He has read widely, and knows much of the lands abroad (though he has not actually travelled there). He had been tutor to the children of one of the lords living at St. Brieuc, but a prolonged and difficult illness lasting nearly a year cost him his position and forced him to leave St. Brieuc and stay with relatives. He recovered and tried to return, but had no position and greatly desires to find a stable place again.
When Sir Achilles wrote to his contacts in St. Brieuc, Naimes stood out from the others as the best candidate. He has now joined the Manor at Caribet as tutor to Lady Helissente, and clerk to Sir Achilles.
Nicole (maid servant)
[Mike] [Light-sleeper; -, Oversensitive (male attention)]
Pepin (scribe)
[Pete] [Educated, Great Dexterity; Non-combatant]
Personal grogPernelle (maid to Iuris Perita; Custos Objurgator)
[Mike] [Grog-leader, Weakness (Iuris Perita)]
Petroc
Alchoholic miner, originally from Cornwall. He never talks about why he left Cornwall, but most presume it was drink-related.
He owns two bonded servants, Ludwan and Sennen, who do all the hard work in the mine.
Pierre Martin(Wood worker)
[Venus' blessing; Bad rep: breaker of hearts/scoundrel]
Married Guen, daughter of the witch of Lanvia
Personal grogRedwald (Veteran)
[David] a stout Shield Grog, in mid-thirties - strong and skilled
(but with a embarrassing tendency to abandon his Magus and vent his Fury on some annoying opponent...)
Sennen
Depressed bonded servant to Petroc. Sennen and Ludwan do all Petroc's hard work for him.
Sergo l'Ancien ("the Veteran")
[Great Stamina; Hired Sword, Judged Unfairly]
Sergo is the ultimate example of the veteran soldier who has never risen from (the ME equivalent of) Corporal. His ludicrously robust constitution has kept him going this long, and he has learnt to use most weapons effectively. He lacks ambition - "'E knows 'is place". He also rambles on in a monotonous mumble about his experiences in Outremer.
All this means of course, that he never really receives the respect some might say he was due. On the other hand, he doesn't worry about this, much.
Thierry (groom)
[Mike] [Animal-ken, Judged unfairly]
Married Mered, June 1224.
Personal grogWilliam
[David] a young lad of around 13 (when he arrived in 1221), apparently favoured by Constantinus
Married to Margery Glassblower
Yves
Brother to Zacharias
Zacharias
Brother to Yves;
Married Amelle, daughter of the witch of Lanvia
Zane "le Fae"
[Dowsing, Second Sight, Weather Sense; Magic air, Magic susceptibility, Short attention]
August 1220: rescued from a Cave Troll by Maga Speranda and others.

BRIERE - The Briere family

The Brieres lived for some years in St. Brieuc, but recently encountered trouble and felt they had to leave. They came to the Covenant, directed (like so many others) from Quintin by Bertrand le Marchant.

Michel Briere, Percamenarius
Michel is a highly skilled craftsman, but would do anything for his pretty young wife. He is conscientious and hardworking, and would like to take on an apprentice
[Knack with vellum; Weak willed]
Marie Briere, Parfumier
A most striking - pretty and vivacious - young woman, wife to the Percamenarius, and a skilled craftswoman in her own right. She knows the Art of distilling Perfumes, and their Secret Properties
[--, Parfumier; Small frame, --]

CLOUARD - The Baillif or Under-Steward

The Baillif, or Under-Steward, came from Petrusca after meeting Maga Speranda at the 1221 Tribunal Gathering.

Jean Clouard (Baillif, or Under Steward)
aged 41, was once an Assistant Under Steward at Petrusca
Marie Clouard(weaver)
wife, aged 41
Adele Clouard (spinner/weaver)
daughter, b. 1203
married Arnaud the scribe, 1222
Francois Clouard
son, b. 1205 - being trained in Stewardship by his father, and expected to take his place one day (perhaps when Jehan retires and Jean Clouard replaces him)

ECLAIR - The Widow's Daughters

The Widow Eclair (witch) of Lanvia had 3 daughters who were running wild and unmarried. Brother Joseph took it upon himself to make respectable wives of them, and found them husbands among the grog Turb. Their courtship came to fruition in June 1221, when they came to the Covenant, and were married on July the 3rd.

Amelle (wife, Witch's Daughter)
She clearly is related to the Fae, and strongly so: she has ears like a cat - long mobile and pointed with a down of hair, and large almond shaped bright green eyes with long eyebrows that rise up across her brow. She cannot bear the touch of Iron, which hampers her attempts at housework.
She is the youngest looking of the three sisters.
[Strong Faerie blood, Outcast: Witch's Get, Small frame, Faerie Features (cat's eyes and ears).]
Married Zacharias.
Guen (wife, Witch's Daughter)
Oldest looking of the 3 sisters. She sings harmless folk songs to bless her house, her husband and others, and readily agrees to bless others, but with variable success - all too often her granted blessings fail.
[--, Blessing, Outcast: Witch's Get, Cursed]
Married Pierre Martin
Ana (wife, Witch's Daughter))
Middle sister by appearance; she has a gift for animals, but resents any who take advantage of her talent to kill those animals she gentles. She herself herself abhors fighting.
[--, Animal ken, Outcast: Witch's Get, Non-combatant]
Married Gilles Tregon

MCTAVISH - The McTavish twins

R.I.P.Donal McTavish RIP
[Mike] [Identical twin] [Large; Oversensitive (attacks on brother)]
Donal died in October 1220, fighting the Ghost in the Tour de Cesson. There is a Obituary by Brother Joseph.
Personal grogDuncan McTavish(shield grog)
[Mike] [Identical twin] [Large; Oversensitive (slurs on Scots heritage)]
Duncan gained his revenge on the Ghost in the Tower

NOLWENN of the Peat Bogs

Nolwenn and her husband Bastian used to eke out a living on the fringes of the Landes du Mené, until he was slain by the Hagbui disturbed by our Vis Hunt, and turned into a Revenant. Now widowed, she and her children were charitably rescued by Magus Constantinus Flambonis and brought to live at the Covenant.

Nolwenn (menial servant)
thin and poor, but generous within her limited resources, she is happy to take work as menial labour for the Covenant (and the rich lifestyle it affords!)
Oanez
(f, b. 1209) the oldest surviving child, she is obedient and accustomed to helping her parents
Riagad
(m, b. 1213) the oldest surviving son, old enough to tend a stew-pot, or the smokehouse
Melle
(f, b. 1215) beginning to be useful, but young still
Klervie
(f, b. 1219) the baby girl, still just toddling.

ROUET - The Rouet family

Jean Rouet (Veteran guard soldier) (=Therese)
[Obsessed with security]
Therese Rouet (Washer woman) (=Jean)
[Gossip; Dependants (1 small children)]
Beatriz
daughter - bore a daughter to Caspar following Midwinter 1225, now married to Caspar.

SARZON - The Sarzon brothers

In July 1220, the Sarzon Brothers absconded from the covenant with stolen goods. They were apprehended by Maga Saskia Apera.

Horas Sarzon (Carpenter)
(curious; unpopular with some locals, e.g. Martin Kerouat, the Miller) (known as thief within Covenant)
Luc Sarzon (Carpenter)
(known as thief within Covenant)

Non-Covenant Characters

Plaintel (Lady Marta's lands)

Robert le Forestier (Custos: Marta's escort)
companion and bodyguard to Lady Marta
[Weakness: women in danger, the defenceless or maltreated]

Ploeuc

Sir Guillaume the mad hunter
Lord of Ploeuc, cousin to Sir Achilles
Bron the Mute (Hunter)
[Hunter, Animal Companion; Mute]
Although Bron's keen eyes and ears guide him to game wherever the game should hide, and though he master the hounds ever so well - still he loses out because of his handicap. Too often he is treated as a simpleton and put down - and has lost hoped for positions with hunts.
He likes a drink with the others, when they will tolerate him (or alone if not), but does not hold his ale well. He often ended up passed-out in the kennels after a drinking bout.
His skill at first aid comes from his skill at healing animals - his keen eyes and deft hands treat both man and beast alike.
In his past job, he got on well with the hounds despite his disability - he keeps a small horn (a smaller version of the one used when out in the woods) and trained the dogs to that. Although this worked well, this bred resentment with other houndsmen, who were accustomed to what they see as the "normal" code of words and phrases, and did not know Bron's horn-code. However, the Covenant is too poor to run a Kennels, and has no Hounds - Bron is not happy with his move to the Forêt de Lorge.
Left Caribet August 1226, in search of a new Kennel - found one in Ploeuc.

St. Eloi

Sir Yves the Fat
Lord of St. Eloi, cousin to Sir Achilles
Galienne
wife to Sir Yves, ex-maid to Speculor

Local Characters

Martin Kerouat (Miller)
[Prosperous, Reclusive]
The local Miller is expected in the story, but has not yet cropped up.

Villagers and Peasants

The Aubin family (shepherd)

The shepherd Rhys Aubin and his family have not yet figured in the story.

Rhys Aubin (Shepherd) (=Anne)
[Weather sense; Soft-hearted]
Anne Aubin (=Rhys)
[Free expression, Sharp ears; Small frame]
Died in childbirth, 1223

The Benodet family (prosperous free peasant farmers)

The Benodet family have a farm, on land of their own, at la Ville-ès-Rio, just beyond Lady Marta's lands. They supply fresh produce to the Covenant, although the Covenant's first attempts to draw them closer in were, shall we say, embarrassing.

Jean Benodet (Farmer) (=Barbe)
[Prosperous peasant, Contacts: farmers; Obligations: family, Magic susceptibility]
Barbe Benodet (=Jean)

Anton (b. 1196)

Mathieu Benodet (=Sarah) (b. 1197)
[Dowsing; Dark secret: Pagan]
Yves Benodet (b. 1220)

Sarah Benodet (=Mathieu)

The Coray family (freeman cottagers)

The Coray family have a cottage in the woods nearby. They had a small role in the Quæsitor's Investigation.

Cídu (large mongrel dog)
companion to Nicolas
Medi Coray (=Nicolas)
[Healer; Dependent: son]
Mai Coray (Storyteller) (60)
[Well known; Weakness: grandson]

Now Departed

Saskia and Beate Pflueger

Personal grogBeate Pflueger (Priscus)
Revealed as Identical-twin to Maga Saskia Apera, and accused of impersonating her sister
Now gone with Saskia, first to Taurus Candidus, then leaving the Tribunal [-; Handicap: continuously on-guard]

MacErc

The MacErc siblings had been wandering lost somewhere in Brittany, but happened to be in St. Brieuc when the Quæsitor and party passed through to take ship to Sarc. Angus was taken up by Donal McTavish, and joined the Covenant as a Guard.
They took off in a huff, and left the Covenant for Plaintel and Lady Marta...

Angus MacErc
Guard in Lady Marta's service [Large,-; Hired sword, -, Dependent: sister]
Angus was disciplined repeatedly for his attempts to find his missing sister rather than follow orders and fulfil his duties; he eventually stole away in the middle of the night and has not been seen since.
Margaret MacErc
[Knack: singing; Non-combatant]
After settling in as one of Lady Marta's maidservants, and her singing-girl, Margaret disappeared (so far as most people are concerned) at the Feast at Quintin in April 1221. The magi have a suspicion that she is connected with the boasts of Petra Jerbitonis in Petrusca, who has acquired a new singing-girl of exquisite voice.

The Ruan family (stone masons)

The Ruan family were met at St. Brieuc and worked initially to repair the tunnelling damage caused to the Tour de Cesson. They have since moved to the main Covenant and on arrival, started work on Covenant buildings proper.

Jacob Ruan (Mason) (=Ann)

Ann Ruan (cook) (=Jacob)
[Animal Ken; Dependent (small boy)]
Jeremiah "Jem" Ruan (Mason)
[Free Expression, Close family, Perfect balance; Simple-minded, Social Handicap: foreign, outsider, Weak-willed]
Nathan Ruan (Mason) (=Marie)
[Ambidextrous, Close family ties, Well-travelled; Fury]
Marie Ruan (weaver) (=Nathan)

Marc Pellan (apprentice mason)
apprenticed to and living with the Ruan family
