Spring Equinox, Friday, March the 13th:
Spring dawns, and we are frantic to satisfy all these visiting
magi, while they rush around unconcerned by our mundane travails,
engrossed in their Hermetic schemings.
The Ides of March, Sunday, March the 15th:
The magi have gone into closed session: no doubt they will decide soon, and
then go away again, and leave us in peace.
Monday, March the 16th:
No peace!
The decision went in favour of founding a new Covenant, and Mummolides has proposed
sponsoring them with Grogs, so I must work to select those who are suitable.
Tuesday, March the 17th:
I need not have bothered. The Criamona have picked the Grogs for me! They are
to start soonest, with supplies and wagons.
And, too, I am to accompany them, released from service here.
Sunday, March the 22nd:
The road has taken us through the Hermitage Lorge,
a pilgrimage site. We were greeted by guards, who asked for donations, which
we paid, and then were waved through.
The magi were not comfortable: it seems the strength of the Christian Dominion
here discommodes them.
Tuesday, March the 24th:
Arrival at the glade picked out by the
magi. The weather has favoured us, and the roads, and it has taken us only a
week to reach the place.
It has all the signs of magic - preternatural colours, rays of sunshine, flowers
everywhere. The magi immediately set to casting spells to sniff out the magic,
trampling the flowers to mud.
Wednesday, March the 25th:
The grogs are reporting signs of a strange glowing
globe. The magi are investigating.
Our lad Zane has The Sight and has found a way into a Regio, a skeleton and a ghost. The magi have recovered the bones, and are sending them to the Hermitage for a Christian Burial, which will send his spirit to rest.
Thursday, March the 26th:
Now the magi are complaining again, for their precious Regio has shrunk to a
small fraction of its previous size. It would seem that the Ghost somehow held
it in shape. Too late to recover the bones!
March the 27th, Good Friday:
The magi have made plans for a central Tower, encircling the central menhir,
with access from each magus' laboratory to the central stone. Stakes and string
have been used to delimit this area.
We have no carpenters or stone masons, mind, and are all living in tents
March the 29th, Easter Sunday:
The grogs are all respectful, even the less pious ones. Most have been to Mass
at Plaintel this weekend, and as many as can have been today.
I am probably damned, for what it is worth, but I did not go. It is too far for my old bones, and Mundanes do not like to look upon my skin, after all the years at Mummolides; I expect the Priest would turn me away from his Church.
Friday, April the 3rd:
Maga Saskia has been spending time in the woods, in her Heart Shape, which is
an impressive Wild Boar (or should I say, Sow). She says little, but what she
has said shows satisfaction with our forest site.
Tuesday, April the 7th:
We have a visitor: Maga Iuris Perita filia Prati
Viridis Guernici ex Objurgatore, who has asked to be admitted to the Covenant. Interesting
that, as I understood that the Quaesitores were opposed to the principle of the
new Covenant. perhaps they want to keep their spies among us?
Iuris Perita has brought several household grogs with her, who must be fitted
in with the established grogs.
The magi have replanned their Tower, and moved all the pegs and strings.
Friday, April the 10th:
We have another visitor: Magus Speculor filius Jovini
Bonisagi ex Petrusca. Another spy perhaps? Petrusca voted en bloc against our establishment,
so perhaps they too wish to interfere?
The magi have again replanned their Tower, and moved all the pegs and strings.
Sunday, April the 12th:
Aversus called by on his rounds. It is good to see his old face again. He takes
message from us to Mummolides. I suspect he has also taken messages for Petrusca
and Objurgator, now we have their spies installed.
Tuesday, April the 14th:
A Pedlar turned up following the forest path between Ploeuc and Plaintel, and
disturbed our peace. No doubt we can now expect a stream of curious busybodies.
Thursday, April the 16th:
We have a noble visitor: a striking Saxon Knight,
hight Eberhardt de Colombiers, Castellan to the Lady Marta de Colombiers de
Plaintel, our neighbour to the north. It seems the Lady claims the land hereabouts.
The magi declared they were scholars, here to plant a herb garden.
I think the Knight mistook our gardeners for armed grogs...
Friday, April the 17th:
The magi have sent our new Quaesitor as their representative to the Lady Marta,
to carry their good wishes and establish themselves. It seems the original threesome
are not completely happy with this, which I can understand; but it was their
decision so they must abide by it.
We have something of a language problem, as not all of the magi speak the Francien tongue, and none the Breton argot; and our grogs (swollen by some local recruits and the magi's personal grogs) have a disparate collection of languages between them.
Saturday, April the 18th:
We now find ourselves claimed by another Lord:
Sir Jean de Ploeuc, "lord of these lands". These fellows came in greater
number and with hostile intent, and when we did not kowtow to them, swept through
our camp intent on wreckage.
The magi cast spells to put a fear into them, and they fled with their tails between their ignoble legs!
It seems the Magi will decide to show favour towards Lady Marta, she being more amicably inclined.
Sunday, April the 19th:
We have erected a stout palisade to keep out
further armed strangers. Jacques, who is acting as Captain of the Guard, pronounces
himself satisfied that this will hold an initial assault, but warns that it
will not hold a determined assault.
Magus Joach has left for Quintin and St. Brieuc, to seek out skilled labour: stone masons and carpenters.
Monday, April the 20th:
No sooner have we erected our palisade, than a barefoot Friar challenges it!
He has descended upon us, to the consternation
of the Magi. It seems he comes from the Hermitage. He has engaged in long discussion
with the magi; and has been preaching to the grogs.
Tuesday, April the 21st:
Brother Joseph has left to return the the Hermitage - I think this may not be
the last of him!
We have few skilled workers, still, but the magi have found some of their magical Vis, which pleases them, at least.
Sunday, April the 26th:
Joach has returned, with two brothers, Carpenters. We have acquired a friendly
contact with a Merchant, one Bertrand de Quintin, who has agreed to supply
us with goods and to transport them here. Bertrand has agreed to put out messages
for us, to hire Stone Masons.
Monday, April the 27th:
The magi have held their first formal Council meeting.
They have given us titles, too: I am to be called Vilicus, and Jacques is to
be Centurion.
They have given themselves titles too, although they only found three titles
between the five of them: it seems two will have to go without titles.
Myself, I must get back to work!
Tuesday, April the 28th:
The friar, Joseph, turned up again, announcing he had visited Sir Jean de Ploeuc,
and found him and his people to be lacking in piety and moral standards. It
seems Sir Jean has been levying accusations against us: the Friar judges in
our favour, which is nice of him...
Saturday, May the 2nd:
Aversus passed by again, and took messages: the magi have sent out to to see
if any will sponsor the Conjuration of a Magical Tower, as they have no mundane
means to construct one.
Sunday, May the 10th:
We have more grogs: a wood-worker (though not a proper Carpenter), a Tanner
and a Quarryman. The Carpenters are working to make furniture for the magi,
so the soldiers are still protesting at having to work as makeshift carpenters.
Wednesday, May the 27th:
The Parentes of the four magi from this Tribunal (Maga Saskia officially comes
to us ex Tauro Candido) have all arrived within a day of each other, come post
haste to assist us.
Thursday, May the 28th:
After wheeling and dealing among themselves,
the senior magi have decided how they will cast the spells, and no doubt, how
much it will cost us.
We were also visited by Urbanus Verbus filius Delaborati Tytali, ex Fudaro, who seemed only to cause trouble throughout his visit.
Tuesday, June the 2nd:
Sir Eberhardt and his men turned up again. Initially he accused us of banditry,
but after discussion with our soldiery changed his mind: further we have agreed
to join forces to pursue these bandits, as it lies in common interest to eliminate
them. They have camped here while they investigate.
Saturday, June the 6th:
The Centurion has now sent men back with Sir Eberhardt, to go to Plaintel, to
continue the search.
Sunday, June the 7th:
The grogs have sent back reports of sorcery by the bandits! Iuris Perita has
gone to investigate, lest it be a Hedge Wizard.
Tuesday, June the 9th:
The Magi worked together, it seems, and have located the bandits deep in the woods. Three magi (Saskia, Speculor
and Speranda) accompanied the grogs to attack them. It turned out that some
Barrow Wight or such was possessing and controlling peasants, and making them
turn against their fellows. The spirits have been dispelled by Hermetic Might.
