Covenant-owned Enchanted Items are held in the Library, in care of the Librarius.
Note the House Rules on Penetration and Devices.
Devised and created in Spring 1221 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A long knife, as long as a sword, but with a knife handle rather than a cross-guard or hilt. [F&E: as Knife, +2 Precise Destruction].
Perdo Terram 5, destroy stone (touch/momentary/individual); Penetration 0.
Continuous action (+5).
The blade of this long knife slices through any stone it touches, cutting in a smooth easy action. For safety, it has a (mundane) wooden sheath. With this knife, a Stone Mason can carve into stone as easily as butter. The long blade is designed to help carve blocks of stone suitable for use in construction, rather than for fine detailed work.
The magic is stopped by metal or gemstone, only acting as a normal long-knife against such.
Devised and created in Spring 1221 by Speculor Bonisagi filius Jovini, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
In Winter 1226, Joachus created his own version of a Vis detection wand, complete with grimacing gargoyle face. His wand displays his characteristic sigil, so that the face wiggles its ears and protudes its tonuge when Vis is detected. The specific gestures indicates the Art of the Vis, rather than use Imaginem to depict it in colour.
Opinion among the grogs is that one can judge the quantity to be found by the "rudeness" of the gestures...In other manners, it is the same as Speculor's Wand, but without the Imaginem requisite.
A short wand of Hazel [F&E: +3 Divination].
Intellego Vim (Imaginem) 5, Near, Momentary, Small; Penetration 0.
Continuous action (+5).
The Wand was devised to enable Grogs to take over the wearisome task of searching the Peat Bogs for Bog-corpses containing Vis, a task first undertaken by Magus Speculor as a service for the Covenant. The Wand permits the Grogs to work their way across and through the bogs until they sense the magic in a Corpse, when they may gather it and return it to the Covenant.
When held in the hand, the wielder senses the nearest object (within 15 paces) containing Raw Vis, seen limned in the colours of Sense the Nature of Vis. It is also surrounded by an Imaginem halo of the same colour, so that those around may also perceive the object and go to collect it.
The wand is continuous in effect, and so cannot be turned off. The wand may be annoying or irritating to use for long periods, as its continuous action will register "No Vis" as a continuous nagging feeling.
Magi also find the wand to be an irritation (or worse, if they must suffer it for an extended period), as it continually "pings" against their Parma Magica - it is trivially resisted (Penetration 5), but it is very annoying to have it trigger so.
Sources of Raw Vis are not sensed, only the Raw Vis itself, so if specific actions, preparation or ritual, are needed to make Vis available it will not be detected. Similarly, Magical Beasts, who corpses might contain Raw Vis are not detected until slain, when their spirit flees and the Vis remains in an extractable form. The wand's limited penetration may easily be blocked by Magic Resistance (or the Imaginem display may be blocked even if Vis is detected).
The Nymphs in the Regio at the Abbey of St. Maur de Glanfeuil, grateful to Speranda for liberating their sister, Ligerica, gave her a Pearl which "if placed in the mouth, will save a man from drowning".
Although non-Hermetic in origin, the effect is similar to Lungs of the Fish (MuAq(Au)) but with maintained concentration touch effect.
Devised and created in Winter 1221 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A small Gargoyle with arms stretched wide to grasp, hands some 3' apart, and a long (4') straight tail behind. The tail may conveniently be grasped and used to move the Gargoyle and its load together.
Rego Terram 5, control or move stone (touch/concentration/individual); Penetration
0.
24 uses per day (+5).
When the outstretched arms of the Gargoyle are pressed up against some heavy object, the magic activates, and the Gargoyle takes up the load, in a manner similar to the spell The Unseen Porter. Whilst the user holds the tail and concentrates on the effect, they may tow the Gargoyle and its load with relative ease.
Excessive enthusiasm when pushing heavy loads results in a heavy mass moving at speed, which will take an equal effort to stop - care should be taken in confined spaces, or when near delicate or fragile objects.
Devised and created in Summer 1223 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A ploughshare, with the pattern of a gargoyle's face worked into its surface. (Apparently the gargoyle face only becomes animated when the plough is activated and the share is below-ground.)
Muto Terram (Rego) 5, change one property of dirt (reach/sun/small -> touch/conc/"room")
and move dirt; Penetration 0.
One use per day, but the device Maintains Concentration (until Sunset at latest).
The ploughshare is designed to be attached to an ordinary plough, and towed by at least a nominal plough team. However, when inserted into the earth and made to start ploughing the magical effect commences, and churns the earth in a 10 pace circle around the device, rendering it into a fine tilth. As the device is moved through the earth, it continually breaks down the earth around it, so that eventually a whole field may be ploughed.
The original version of this (Summer 1222) enchanted an Iron Ploughshare, which infuriated the fairies of the field, so the device was sold to Wirbelnia. Magus Joachus then repeated the enchantment, using a Wooden Ploughshare, in the hope that this would prove less aggravating to fairies!
Devised and created in Autumn 1222 by Constantinus Flambonis filius Scintillae, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A Statue of St Vincent of Saragossa (Patron Saint of Vineyards, allowing a +1 F&E bonus). The statue is built into a niche in the walls enclosing the new vineyard.
Creo Ignem (Heat an object so that it is warm to the touch: in this case, so that
no frost affects it), level 1 increased RDT from Near/Momentary/Small to Touch/Sun/Special
(Structure: a vineyard) level 5;
Two uses per day, for a final Effect level of 6. [Penetration is 0.]
The Statue does not keep the ground unnaturally warm (although it could have done); rather it ensures that the soil remains mild and frost free all year round.
Devised and created in Winter 1223 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A pair of identical bells.
Creo Imaginem GL 1 (1 sense: sound) increased range to Arcane: level 5
24 uses per day, for a final effect level of 10.
The bells were created as identical bells, but enchanted as two distinct halves. Striking the triggering bell causes the receiving bell to ring (and continue to ring for a few seconds).
The triggering bell is placed at the Manor in Caribet village, and the receiving bell in the Council Chamber in the Tower - the bells are used to signal an alarm in the village desiring the attention of the magi from the tower.
Devised and created in Winter 1225 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 2 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A Stone Gargoyle, mounted over the entrance to the Granary.
Rego Animal 10, level 5 plant a single suggestion in the mind of an animal, increased
RDT (touch/conc/ind -> touch/mom/struct); Penetration 0.
Continuous action (+5).
The Gargoyle animates and pulls grotesque faces whenever any pest animal enters the building it is attached to - at times when insects are busy, it's face may be continuously grimacing!
Pests have been defined as the colloquial "grain eating vermin", including "creepy crawlies", "bugs", mice/rats and similar. It does not affect "beneficial" creatures such as vermin hunting cats and owls (though they will find little within), but also does not affect potential Familiar species. Thus, foxes are not excluded - though they are considered vermin by many farmers, they are potential familiars to magi, and they do not eat grain.
Found Spring 1227, in the caves of the Sirens, on the north coast of Brittany.
This plain cast-iron pot appears to transform the appearance and form of liquids and (dead) plant- and animal material placed within it, so that they become a delicious and edible meal of the same quantity as inserted.
The pot does not change the nature of the substances, and hence does not make them more (or less) nutritious or poisonous - it appears to be a simple Muto Animal (Herbam, Aquam) effect. (A lesser Ignem effect or requisite also warms the food). Nor is the change permanent: observation reveals that the effect expires at sunset or sunrise.
The result of the change is that uncooked grain, vegetables, and/or meat instantly become a nutritious meal; less nutritious substances (such as grass) may be placed within, and are equally delicious, but less sustaining. A traveller may save substantail time and effort by making thei twice-daily meal in this pot.
The description is necessarily vague, as the practical use is so obvious that no magical laboratory investigation has been needed -so the precise Heremtic details are not known. Nevertheless, the device is believed to be Hermetic.
Devised and created in Summer 1227 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 1 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A small wooden Gargoyle with a leather cape.
Muto Animal (Herbam) 5, level 5 major change to something made of animal products
that preserves the substance, change RDT (touch/sun/ind -> pers/conc/struct);
Penetration 0.
Maintains Concentration (+5), Unlimited use (+10),
Affects Device Only (*½)
Overall Effect level 10.
On command he doffs the cape and shakes it out to form a leather pavilion (his wooden body forms the poles and pegs), on another command he shrinks the pavilion back into being his cape.
The pavilion is of generous size, with several partition curtains to divide the space within into chambers. The pavilion is complete with wooden poles and pegs, and guy-ropes.
The tent has a cheerful carnival colour scheme...
Devised and created in Summer 1227 by Constantinus Flambonis filius Scintillae, as a 2 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A bed on which the patient may rest. Worked into the frame are peices of Jasper (F&E +2 healing) and Rock Crystal (F&E +3 Healing).
Creo Corpus 15, give a person a +9 bonus to recovery rolls (Touch/Sun/Ind)
Two uses per day (+1).
A patient needing long-term care may find it most convenient to be put to bed on the Healing Bed. If the patient is ambulatory, they need but sit upon the bed at dawn and at dusk to obtain full benefit - but they do need constant exposure to the magical effect to benefit.
A magus may sit upon the bed as they renew their Parma Magica, and allow the healing effect to wash over them.
Use of the bed for 6 months or longer may have deleterious effects upon the patient.
Devised and created in Summer 1229 Constantinus Flambonis filius Scintillae, as a 2 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw raw notes for the Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
He repeated the enchantment in Spring 1230, using his own Lab Text.
A brass lamp (+7 create light).
Creo Ignem (GL 4), increased to Touch/Conc/Ind level 10
Item maintains concentration (+5), 24 uses per day (+5) for final level 20.
The magi have become increasingly protective and paranoid about dangers to their book collection, and so desired to avoid taking flames near the books. The lamp addresses this fear.
The lamp is turned on and off by the same gesture, rubbing the brass lamp with the hand.
This was acquired from the Gardener in the Walled Garden in Arcadia, when Speranda, Amelle and others were directed there by Quercus on Midsummer's Day 1229.
Speranda has determined how to infuse the cup with a pawn of Herbam Vis, so that it sprouts an acorn; the acorn may be removed and planted. It does not grow into a seedling, but rather infuses itself into the soil around the planting.
It is hoped that this Faerie Vis will attract the Field Faeries to return, and restore a Magical Aura to Caribet Village. So far, the returning faeries have brought a Faerie Aura...
When the body thought to be Peter de Flanders was found in Autumn 1229, the belongings alongside the body yielded 24 Fetishes thought to be used in Summoning, and three Amulets of unknown function.
We put them carefully in the Library and have left them there.
When the Wind Man was defeated, in the Landes du Menée in Winter 1229, a grave was found in the ruins.
Under the stones of the grave cap was a skeleton, still wearing a suit of chainmail and holding a sword. Neither item was rusted, although other items in the grave had rusted or rotted away, so it is obvious that these items were enchanted.
We put them carefully in the Library and have left them there.
Devised and created in Spring 1229 by Speculor Bonisagi filius Jovini, as a 3 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A crystal lens (+5 scrying), chased in silver (+2 corpus)
Intellego Corpus (GL 3 locate a person using an AC), increased to Arcane, Conc,
Ind level 20.
50 uses per day (+6) for final level 26.
The lens is used with a map and an arcane connection to the missing person, just as the formulaic spell, except that the user peers through the crystal lens at the map.
The magi have found over the years that grogs sometimes disappear unexpectedly, and that this is usually due to mysterous circumstances. Previously this required the attention of a magus (typically Speculor) to locate the missing grog - but now the grogs can be left to complete the task without disturbing the magi.
Devised and created in Winter 1229 by Joachus Verditii filius Dergori, as a 3 Pawn Lesser Enchanted Device; the raw notes for the (Incomprehensible) Laboratory Text are deposited in the Library.
A carved wooden Brooch (Jewellery: +2 move self), set with Amber (+3 corpus)
Rego Corpus GL 5(move a target slowly in any direction even if unsupported), increased
to Touch, Concentration, level 15
Device maintains concentration, 12 uses per day, for a final level of 24.
The brooch is attached to the person to be moved, and the activator (who may be the wearer, or another) rubs the gem 3 times. Thereafter, the activator may touch the brooch and concentrate to make the body move as they direct; when they release their concentration, the brooch takes over and continues that motion.
Thus a magus may wear the brooch and safely levitate and move through the air; or the brooch may be attached to a wounded grog, unable to walk, who may be floated alongside his companions. The wounded may be controlled even if they are unable to concentrate themselves.
