Private Libraries

Ownership of books

Inititally all books in the Covenant were part of the founding library. However, in recent times, books have been acquired as personal property of individual magi. While they may not be disposed of without retaining a copy within the Covenant (see Charter), these books are not available without negotiation with their owner, who remains free to store them privately and withhold them as they see fit.

Iuris Perita

Iuris Perita is the first to gain a private collection of texts. [Other magi have made private copies of common texts.]

She gained two tractatus on Heremtic Law as a Judge's Gift from Fudarus in the dispute between Odela & Wirbelnia in Summer 1225.

She also gained three tractatus on Craft Automata, a secret knowledge of House Verditius, from covenant Dextrovorsum in Britannia, in recompense for investigating the untimely death of Artifex Verditii. She accepts that to retain the good will of Verditius, she should not read these texts without permission from that House. Magus Joachus has expressed a substantial interest in these texts...

Descriptions of Tractatus

On Humaniform Automata, Craft Automata, by Artifex Verditii ad Dextrovorsum in Britannia

The book's cover bears the seals of House Verditius; the introduction invokes curses and the wrath of the House upon any who peruse the contents without permission.

Tractatus on Craft Automata
A personal copy gifted to Iuris Perita by Velucor Verditii ad Dextrovorsum in Britannia, Summer 1225.
The authors' first Tractatus expounds upon the his enthusiasm for humanoid automata.
Held by Iuris Perita until some suitable magus of Verditius should take charge of them (and recompense her for them).
An autograph copy, in Latin.

On Campaniform Automata, Craft Automata, by Artifex Verditii ad Dextrovorsum in Britannia

The author's second Tractatus expounds upon the his enthusiasm for automatic bells.
Held by Iuris Perita until some suitable magus of Verditius should take charge of them (and recompense her for them).
An autograph copy, in Latin.

On Automata and Time, Craft Automata, by Artifex Verditii ad Dextrovorsum in Britannia

The book's cover bears the seals of House Verditius; the introduction invokes curses and the wrath of the House upon any who peruse the contents without permission.

Tractatus on Craft Automata, (Incomprehensible)
A personal copy gifted to Iuris Perita by Velucor Verditii ad Dextrovorsum in Britannia, Summer 1225.
The author's fourth Tractatus expounds upon the his obsession for the connection between Automata and Time itself, including his views that Automata are in some sense timeless (as they neither age nor require sustenance), and so outside time... Alas the author's arguments are obscure and mysteries, to the extent that they are nearly incomprehensible. Any reader must struggle to make sense of the text.
Held by Iuris Perita until some suitable magus of Verditius should take charge of them (and recompense her for them).
An autograph copy, in Latin.

Speranda

Speranda spent Winter 1225 at Castellar in Hispania, where she searched out and copied two of the texts in their (chaotically scattered) library. She retained these for her personal use - until such time as she finds a good reason to 'donate' them to the covenant.

In Autumn 1226, she donated A Primer in Perdo to the Covenant, and was given the thimbles of fairy wine (which she alone desired).

Descriptions of Summa

A Primer in Animal, Animal

A novice's primer on Animal, by Vipera Bjornaeris. An old text, copied by an anonymous apprentice. Some copies of this text have illustrations of the beasts, but many (including this one) do not - it is assumed that magi and apprentices are intelligent enough to master the text without such devices.
The book is scribed on parchment, in a simple, workaday binding.
A copy made by Speranda for her own use, from the library of Castellar in Hispania.
In Latin.
Illuminated by Fulk, Winter 1226.
