Nobles, Towns and Manors

Local Figures

Cité de Saint Brieuc

Bishop Philippe

Appointed by the Bishop of Rennes to replace the fallen Bishop Evrard (q.v.), Bishop Philippe steps into a role combining Theology and practical management - the Bishopric holds the fief of the City of St. Brieuc itself..

Lords of St. Brieuc

There are a number of mundane Lords and Knights who make home in St. Brieuc, as well as some of the richer merchants.

Merchants and others

Julien de St. Brieuc

A Spice Merchant, and friend of Bertrand de Quintin. Julien appears in the story of the Tour de Cesson.

Ibrahim the Jew

A wealthy Jewish merchant, with excellent contacts in St. Brieuc society. He is said to have a very beautiful daughter.

Surrounding Manors

Tregeux

Sir Turpin is a wealthy lord, with several ships, merchant interests and land, but also a Bad Reputation.

It is said his ships indulge in piracy, that he trades in stolen goods, and that one of his merchants was hanged for selling ergotised grain. He is not welcome with the other lords of St. Brieuc; he is "known" in the Duke's Court.

Langeux and Yffiniac

Baron Raoul holds these two manors, along with a number of other more distant manors.

Ploufragan

Sir Guibert holds the manor, assisted by his brother Sir Foulque the Red. Unfortunately his brother turns out to be a Werewolf! Sir Guibert has a number of legal disputes with his neighbours, going back many years, and expects Sir Achilles to help his in his suits.

Sir Guibert's daughter Helissente, who is not a Werewolf, has married Sir Achilles de Caribet.

Cité de Dinan

Cité de Rennes

Rennes is on of the largest cities in Brittany, and the ancient seat of Breton Parliament, sharing this role for half of the year with Nantes, the other seat of the Parliament.

Ville de Quintin

Lord Gaidon de Quintin

Quintin is a fortified town on a trade road to St. Brieuc. It holds markets, and levies a Toll on travellers passing through. It also benefits from riverine trade on the Gouet. The Baron also gets fees from the various Guilds.

In addition he holds some lands surrounding Quintin.

Citizens

Bertrand de Quintin [Mike]

A Merchant and traveller, who supplies the Covenant with a number of sorts of goods from his train of pack horses.

He lives with his young daughter, but no wife.

Jourdain de Quintin, Merchant

Another Merchant, known to Bertrand. Jourdain is wealthy and has direct contacts with several noble lords, including Baron Alain de Robien.

Sir Jean de Ploeuc and Baron Alain de Robien met at the house of Jourdain, in the tale of Witchcraft - but were thwarted by Brother Joseph and the Monks of the Hermitage.

Jourdain de Quintin (a wealthy Merchant with a fine house and shop) is not to be confused with Jourdain-the-Peddler.

Jourdain the Peddler

A Peddler-cum-Merchant, who used to trade in small goods from Ploeuc until Sir Jean was executed; he then disappeared for some months.

He has has now reappeared as a trader in fine scribes' materials, based in Quintin. (Also fine cloth, silver and glassware, but the magi are not interested in those things.) He appears to have come up in the world since he carried small items from Ploeuc.

Jourdain the Peddler is not to be confused with Jourdain de Quintin (a wealthy Merchant with a fine house and shop).

Ponce, an Old Man

Ponce has figured as a source of tales about Quintin and the surrounding area. He lives with his son and daughter-in-law in a small cottage; when left alone in the house he is reluctant to admit any visitors.

The Sarzon brothers [Sheila]

These two carpenters came from Quintin, but now live at the Covenant.

Ville de Moncontour

Sir Harde de Moncontour

Moncontour is a modest but prosperous town beyond the Forêt de Lorge to the East. It trades with St. Brieuc, with Lamballe to the north-east, and with the smaller towns nearby.

Known to border the Forest of Lorge, but no-one from the Covenant has visited them recently.

Ville de Loudéac

Loudéac lies to the south of the Forêt de Lorge, and to the east of the heart of the great Faerie Forêt de Broceliande. There is a Pilgrim Road running north to the Hermitage Lorge and on to St. Brieuc.

Known to border the Forest of Lorge, but no-one from the Covenant has visited them recently.

Sir Begon is a proud lord, with but one daughter, for whom he sought a good suitor. Sir Achilles hoped to be that man, as she had a large dowry. Unfortunately, Sir Raymond de St. Gerard won the lady's hand.

Despite this, he and Sir Achilles made a friendly acquaintance, sealed by exchanges of gifts, and may see more of each other in the future.

Surrounding Manors

St. Barnabé

Sir Beaudonnier is a poor lord, seeking to improve his finances. He offered his daughter's hand to Sir Achilles, but expected to give very little dowry, and clearly expected Achilles to reward him for overlooking Sir Achilles "obvious flaws" (such as the tower of wizards, haunted forest, etc.)

La Motte

Sir Galafre has obviously heard tell of Sir Achilles and his "Court of Wizards" and was keen to forge an alliance on that basis! Sadly, Sir Achilles had to turn down his offers, and the hand of his fine daughter, lest the Magi become "seriously interested" in the problem!

Manoir de Plaintel

The Lordship of Plaintel is divided into three parts, with St. Brandan and Lanvier held as vassals of Plaintel:

Lady Marta de Colombiers de Plaintel [Phil]

Lady Marta holds the Manor of Plaintel, and its sub-manors, since the death of her husband. She has an ongoing legal battle to retain this in the face of other wishful claimants.

Eberhardt de Colombiers [Phil]

Eberhardt is a mercenary Knight from Saxony, who is in service to Lady Marta. He acts as her champion when such is required, but stays well out of local politics.

Manoir de St. Brandan

Sir Foulque de St. Brandan

Sir Foulque and his household knights Hamund and Godefroi, and their household men held off Alain de Robien and his men, when they laid siege to the manor, before retiring when Canon Philbert and his support from the Bishop of St. Brieuc were sent packing by Brother Petrus from the Hermitage.

(Note: Sir Hamund, knight of Sir Foulque, is not the Diabolic Sir Hammund who used his Infernal Powers to lead raiders against Caribet and other villages in 1221.)

Manoir de Lanvier

Harbours the Widow Eclair; her unruly daughters (Amelle, Guen and Ana) are married to Covenant grogs.

Manoir de Ploeuc

The Holding of Ploeuc is divided into two parts, with St. Eloi held as vassal to Ploeuc:

Ploeuc and St. Eloi are now in the Stewardship of Sir Achilles de Caribet, held on behalf of the Duc de Bretagne who seized the lands when Sir Jean defaulted (was executed). Sir Achilles has appointed two knights (distant cousins of Sir Achilles) as his Bailiffs, to live on and maintain the Manors for him:

Sir Jean de Ploeuc

Sir Jean was perhaps the bugbear of the Covenant's existence. He tried to claim their fealty when they had just arrived, but was trounced, and inadvertently drove them into the arms of Lady Marta. He always seemed to be scheming against them, but dared not act too directly lest they trounce him again. In a final act of folly, he accepted advice from a Demonic serpent, was discovered, tried and executed.

Sir Jean had two household Knights (Sir Ernaut and Sir Baudouin) and a Vassal Knight (Sir Marc de St. Eloi). Père Vidal was Priest to Sir Jean, but was proved to be a co-conspirator with the Serpent.

Household of Ploeuc

Sir Guillaume, cousin to Achilles de Caribet

Sir Guillaume is a distant cousin to Sir Achilles, and was appointed Bailiff to Plouec when Achilles gained the Stewardship of the Manor. Sir Guillaume is obsessed with hunting, absent-minded and a deep sleeper. He fought in various campaigns prior to joining Achilles.

However Guillaume's hunting passion has proved useful to Achilles in coaching him in riding and hunting, practices he was not accustomed to by his previous life as a legal clerk to the Duke...

Père Edwin

Edwin is acting as Priest to the Manor, until the Bishop appoints a new Priest. [The previous incumbent, Père Vidal was condemned along with Jean de Ploeuc.]

Bron - a mute dog-handler

Bron was originally recruited by the Covenant as a hunter, but it became apparent he was ill-suited to the task and deeply unhappy - Caribet has no Hounds.

Sir Guillaume has obtained (extorted? over-spent) money to buy several fine hounds and to have a Kennels constructed. Bron has now moved into service with Sir Guillaume.

Jourdain, trader and pedlar

For some while after Sir Jean de Ploeuc was removed he did not visit Caribet - however he has now moved to Quintin and resumed trading with the Covenant. He is a frequent visitor and rival to Bertrand le Marchant.

Melor, a Woodsman

Another minor encounter in the woods, on a few occasions. (He was one of the first to provide evidence of Blasphemy in the Woods.)

Melor's house has a Lutin (Brownie) in residence.

Beuve, a Minstrel

While Beuve has not entered any stories so far, some of the grogs will have heard of him, as he travels the area.

Manoir de St. Eloi

Sir Yves, cousin to Achilles de Caribet

Holds the manor for Sir Achilles, Steward of Plouec. Another distant cousin appointed by Sir Achilles, he had some education as a boy, and can read and write.

Alas, he is a spendthrift and a glutton (and obese with it).

Lady Galienne

Sir Yves married Galienne, previously maid to Magus Speculor, in June 1226. It has been revealed that mistress Galienne had (some) noble blood in her, being a bastard daughter of a lord near to Petrusca.

They have a small daughter.

Village of Caribet

There is a full census of Caribet and the Magi's Covenant is available.

The Turb of the Covenant of Saxum Caribetum overflowed the original space prepared for them, and began to make the Magi worried about the strength of their Magical Aura. They arranged for the grogs to build and live in a new village to the north of the Glade, where they were already working to clear fields for crops.

Subsequently they contrived the appointment of a minor noble, Sir Achilles d'Azé, who became Sir Achilles de Caribet, appointed by the Duc de Bretagne. Sir Achilles now has a fine manor house, befitting his station.

When magus Constantinus joined the Covenant, he brought a Chaplain with him: Father Edwin Fairchild; the Grogs have built a stone Church for him and he now ministers to the Manor. After the trials in Plouec in Spring 1222, and the dismissal of Père Vidal, Fr. Edwin took on a temporary ministry until the Bishop appoints a replacement. [His temporary appointment has lasted seven years so far...]

Sir Achilles let it be known that he sought a wife, and a number of nobles offered their daughters, and an allegiance with the house of Caribet. The chosen maiden was Helssente, daughter of Sir Guibert de Ploufragan. It should be noted that Lady Helissente is not a werewolf (although her Uncle Foulque is...).

Their son and heir, Philippe, appears to be entirely normal and healthy. He is not a puppy... No, not at all...

Their daughter Rubea was born on the Harvest Moon in September 1226, along with the other daughters of the midwinter feast. She had a fire in her eyes, bushy eyebrows and pointed ears (although these have diminished as she grows); she can see the Invisible including Faeries. When she was but a few months old, she was kidnapped by Faeries and taken to live in the grove of the Dryad Quercus - but was rescued by a party led by Maga Speranda. She has grown implausibly rapidly after drinking Faerie waters in the Dryads' Grove, even over-taking her older brother. Amelle ("the Cat") is her nursemaid and tutor, and pays particular attention to such skills as Faerie Sight, Faerie Lore,...

Since Sir Achilles was "otherwise occupied" at that Midwinter Feast, and Rubea is clearly a Daughter of the Feast, the identity of the true father remains a mystery. Some have noticed that Magus Constantinus expresses a quiet but firm interest in the fate of the girl.

Their second daughter has nut-brown skin, green eyes, and curly hair like oak leaves. She too was born on the Harvest Moon, and clearly has very strong Faerie blood (green?). It is said that her true father is Quercus, Lord of the Oaks, and that Wizards attended her birth, to witness the event and offer their blessing, and it is said that Sir Achilles is too scared to deny his bastard daughter... At the time of writing, however, she has not yet been named.

Manoir de Plaine-Haute

Sir Brantome holds two manors, with Forsard de Plaine-Haute as vassal to Brantome.

He has a castle at Crenan, nearby.

Carfot

Sir Brantome holds this directly

Plain-Haute

Sir Forsard is vassal knight to Sir Brantome.

Manoir de St. Donan

Sir Gris de St. Donan.

Chateau de Robien

The Chateau de Robien sits about 2 km from Quintin and has extensive holding to the north and west of Quintin, as well as a number of more distant sub-manors. Baron de Robien also has interests in trading rights both in Quintin, and St. Brieuc.

The Barony is divided to support two Knights Banneret (of three Knights) at Corlay and le Fœil, and three Vassal Knights (St. Bihy, St. Gildas and le Vieux Bourg); and the main Manor of the Chateau and Carestremble and St. Eutrope.

Baron Alain de Robien

Lord Alain is one of the rivals to Lady Marta de Plaintel, and seeks to use his influence to bring the Widow's lands under his own. He is known to be pursuing legal actions to stake a claim to her lands, following the demise of her husband. So far, the wily Lady Marta has beaten off all his attempts. Sir Alain has a friendly rivalry with his neighbour Lord Gaidon de Quintin.

He was involved with Sir Jean de Ploeuc in a misguided attempt to levy charges against Lady Marta, of harbouring Witches followed by an attempt to use a Ducal warrant against her by force of arms, which backfired and resulted in a humiliating retreat for the Baron. He is currently still displeased with Jean de Ploeuc over this incident.

In Winter 1230, Lady Marguerite was faced with a bloodthirsty ghost, while her Lord was away, and was forced to ask help of the Scholars at Caribet. Her 2nd son, Louis (Br. Timothy of the Hermitage) was threatened, as the 7th son (male descendant) of her father Lord Raoul d'Avaugour. However, it turned out that her nephew Raould, son of Charles (now Lord d'Avaugor) had been born the same day, and the Hag/Faerie Lady was persuaded to accept him instead.

They married, and departed, presumably to live happily ever after.
