Rules - Penetration
Spell Penetration
Spell Penetration is reduced
by Spell Level.
- For the Penetration Total:
compute the Casting Total as normal, add the Penetration Ability and subtract
Spell level.
- Vis boosting can be used to add to the Casting Total as normal, thereby boosting
Penetration Total.
- Spontaneous spell casters can limit the Spell Level, so as to have a greater
Penetration Total (otherwise it will be zero + Penetration Talent).
Enchanted Devices
Device Penetration is
reduced by Effect Level, just like spells. (Reduce by total Effect Level, not
base Spell Level)
- The default Penetration of a Device is (Effect Level - Effect Level) i.e. 0.
And
Basing Penetration
off the Enchanter's (recorded) Art levels [+4 to Effect Level]
or the wielder's Art levels [+8 to Effect Level] has the obvious result:
Pen = (Tech+Form - modified Effect Level)
and the +4 or +8 penalty is included in this subtraction.
The Penetration of
a Device is not affected by Stamina or Penetration Talent (neither Wielder's nor
Enchanter's).

Increased Penetration
Modifier
- The rules on p. 86 of the ArM rule book are superceded.
- When enchanting an Effect into a device, you can Increase Penetration:
each +1 Increased Penetration Modifier adds +2 to Penetration
Potions
The ArM rule book omits any definition of Penetration for Potions.
Potion Penetration is
here based on the Effect Level
Potion Penetration is
reduced by Effect Level, like Spells (and so is 0 by default). You can choose to
increase Penetration:
- You can choose to forgo extra doses
of Potion, trading levels of Lab Total for Increased Penetration, 1 for 1
- You can use Vis to boost the Lab Total, either for increased dosage, or for
increased Penetration
Penetration Talent & Sympathetic Magic
The Rules in The Mysteries
for "Boosting Penetration with Sympathetic Magic" will apply whenever
Penetration Talent applies:
- Possession of an Arcane Connection to a target grants a Base Multiplier to the
Penetration Ability
- Possession of that Arcane Connection also lets you boost Penetration using Sympathetic
Magic, adding to the Base Multiplier
- The Certamen Ability can be boosted in the same manner as Penetration Ability.

- Parma Magica can be boosted against specific enemies (up to your Parma Magica
score), using only Sympathetic Connections. [1]
The precise multipliers are as published in The Mysteries.
Note:
- If the Ability (Certamen or Parma Magica) exceeds your Penetration
Ability, subtract the difference from the total as a penalty.
