The Plot
The Council Saxi Caribeti desires the Conjuration of a Tower, with
the skill and Vis to be provided by magi more experienced and wealthy
than themselves, in return for which they will enter into so form of debt
arrangement with the donors of the Tower. Since the Parentes of four of the
five magi in the Council are present, and their filii recognise their debt
and duty to their parentes, the four filii have agreed to stay largely out
of the debate, and to place most responsibility onto their sodalis Speranda.
Four other Covenants have sent a representative, choosing to send the parens
(or sponsor) of a filius at Saxum Caribetum for greater influence. Each of
these Covenants has the wealth (or the means to acquire the wealth) to provide
the Vis for the Ritual, and would like a debt of favour to be owed
to themselves; or has an equally strong desire to ensure that some other
Covenant does not obtain favour over themselves. Rather than have the junior
magi make decisions affecting themselves, they would prefer to fabricate
some deal amongst themselves, presenting a single offer to the Council Saxi
Caribeti.
The Redcap Aversus represents, in some fashion, the Council of Criamon magi
at Mummolides, who saw fit to sponsor the founding of Saxum Caribetum. He
has a friendly, avuncular relationship with the new Covenant, and would be
distressed to see the manipulative schemers gaining undue influence over
the growing magi.
Urbanus Verbus will turn up part way through the proceedings and announce
himself as paying a "friendly visit" to neighbouring magi, by coincidence
when the other visitors are here; but later reveal matters of vital import
(that he might sow further dissent).
The Debate
The day began with a feast, of the simple local produce, made glorious by
our magics. Speranda closed the feast and opened the debates by making a
greeting speech, reminding the magi of the reason for calling them, and the
matters they were to agree upon.
To the accompaniment of airy voices, conjured again from Imaginis, the magi
broke apart into pairs and trios to discuss their approaches and offers,
to learn the attitude of others, and to trade favours.
Several of those present have recorded their private views and impressions
of the day.
-
Jehan the Vilicus gave me
this account. He was privy to little,
but observed much.
-
Urbanus Verbus offered me a
personal account, with a different
slant on the proceedings.
-
Speranda records her own thoughts elsewhere, in her extensive
Journal
-
Saskia wrote a
letter afterwards to the rest of the covenant.
Finally, a number of agreements were made and sworn
in front of the Quæsitores
The Agreement for the Conjuration of the Tower at
Saxum Caribetum
-
This Agreement is Witnessed and recorded by Pratus Viridis Quæsitor
Objurgatoris
-
That Petrusca (Jovinus), Septem Montes (Dergorus) and Taurus Candidus (Reneus
Taurus) should equally provide the Vis for the spell, with Reneus performing
the Ritual Conjuring The Mystic Tower.
-
That Saxum Caribetum owe 15 pawns of Vis for the spell and the Vis expended,
in equal share to all three, and be indebted equally to all three Covenants
while the debt remain unpaid.
[Speranda seemed especially delighted by this condition, as the pull of
favours to vote in three different directions effectively cancelled out,
provided that Saxum Caribetum abstain on matters of conflict.]
-
That the Stone from the Menhir
at Saxum Caribetum be held in safe keeping by the Quæsitores at Objurgator,
until redeemed by the payment of 35 pawns of Vis, to be divided equally
between the three Covenants. Once redeemed, Saxum Caribetum shall be free
to use the stone as they see fit.
[And so, the Quæsitores gain an Arcane Connection to Saxum
Caribetum.]
The Agreement between Urbanus Verbus filius Delaborati Tytali,
ex Fudaro, and Jovinus filius Accanellæ Bonisagi, ex Petrusca
-
This Agreement is Witnessed and recorded by Pratus Viridis Quæsitor
Objurgatoris
-
That Urbanus Verbus receive from Jovinus, payment of 35 pawns of Vis,
20 pawns paid immediately, and a further 15 pawns of Vis Terræ
to be paid within 1 Moon of this agreement.
-
That Jovinus receive from Urbanus Verbus, the
Stone from the Menhir at Saxum
Caribetum, sworn to be the sole extant chip from said Menhir.
-
That the deal be forsworn and all paid matters reverted if the stone prove
not unique when tested by magic.
